Andrew – Team Policy Debate

Favorite Event: Extemporaneous Speaking
What do you look forward to at nationals?
“One of the best things about my NCFCA experience has been the opportunity it has provided me to meet people and build friendships. More than anything else at nationals I’m looking forward to having one last tournament to spend with my friends, as well as the opportunity to meet competitors from other parts of the country. I’m also looking forward to the high level of competition at nationals and the fun that accompanies it.

Favorite Hobbies:
“As far as pastimes go, for me few things top reading a good book. My favorite is J.R.R. Tolkien’s well-known trilogy The Lord of the Rings. I also have enjoyed books such as Anna Karenina, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Nicholas Nickleby. In addition to reading, I enjoy spending time hiking, biking, and backpacking.”

How has speech and/or debate benefited you?
“I’ve benefited from speech and debate in many ways. My experiences in the NCFCA have helped me not only think logically, but also communicate those thoughts in an organized and convincing manner. Debate has improved my note-taking and research skills. I have also become more aware of the complexities of current issues and events in the world, and in many ways I believe that my speech and debate experience has prepared me to take part in the great conversation about the ideas that are shaping this new century. Finally, the NCFCA has given me all the opportunities I’ve needed to make many new friends. Speech and debate has definitely been one of the best experiences of my life.”

Favorite memory from the year:
“I’ve made far too many memories this year to start picking favorites. High points included the Houston National Open, going 6-0 in debate for the first time at the Idaho Qualifier, and Qualifying to nationals, but the collective best is all the time I spent getting to know people and hanging out with my friends this year.”
